So a lot has happened since I last posted. It’s a sort of, good news / bad news type of posting today.

About two weeks ago the doctor’s found a white spot on the heart of my baby via ultrasound. Now, while this was said to be “not uncommon,” it did create a “twice-as-likely” chance that our baby would have Down Syndrome. Fortunately, a blood test that baby’s momma took gave us the relief we needed with a 99% accuracy that our baby is, in fact, healthy. So good news.

The bad news is that I had to find the results of this out via text message, because baby’s momma is not currently speaking to me. “Dealing with me” has been “too stressful” and so, in the hopes of making sure my baby is healthy, I will simply just be taking a step back, do my thing, and wait. It is a incredibly frustrating that I’m not allowed to go to doctor’s appointments anymore, but she said she’d text me if she had any news. This is the sad reality for many men who are or have been in my situation. The right thing to do is “whatever makes sense for the well-being of your kid.”

And, so, the right thing for me to do for my baby is to figure out how to have a good relationship with baby’s momma. So the “not speaking to me” issue didn’t stop me from having a batch of tulips (seen below) delivered to her for Mother’s Day with the following card: “To the greatest mother in the world. Kevin”

Due date is September 1st, 2012, so I only have 15 weeks to figure this stuff out. Wish me luck.

And to all mother’s everywhere, I hope you had an amazing Mother’s Day. Know that you are loved and appreciate well beyond words. I posted this following tweet yesterday: “To the women who made us lovers, fathers, sons or daughters – We love you! Happy Mother’s Day!”

As a touring musician who endured near claustrophobic circumstances in an oft-crowded tour bus with other smelly musicians, you would likely think that I learned nothing about being a good dad during those years. And generally, though much of the experience wasn’t “kid friendly,” I have realized in preparing for my new baby that there were a number of lessons that I did learn which could benefit any father, rockstar or otherwise.

Lesson 1: People are more important than things

What’s the difference between a drunk bass player and a toddler? Basically 20 years. Having a bunch of rock musicians crammed into a very expensive tour bus, a vehicle that I was on the hook for, was one way of guaranteeing that something would invariably get damaged. Small plastic things would break on the interior of the tour bus without much effort and we even had the misfortune of causing thousands of dollars of damage to the back end (see photo) on the windy steep streets of Laurel Canyon in Hollywood. At the end of the day, the relationships I still have with the guys I was blessed to play with during those years are way more valuable than some stupid bus. Subsequently, the love you have for your kids is a lot greater than any DVD player or coffee table book. I will do my best to remember this lesson the first time my kid puts a pop tart in my X-Box. My son is a lot more important than the things I have. Things can be replaced, but I only get one shot at helping him develop into a happy and healthy adult.

Lesson 2: Memories are all that you get to take with you

Now that my touring schedule has pretty much dwindled to nothing, one thing that I will always have are the amazing memories of the shows, the fun, the fans, and the friends I made. I still chuckle at the amazing show at Starry Plough in Berkeley California where my improv song “Dangerzone, Pleasure Throne (or something like that)” resulted in the packed house giving me a standing ovation, or how about the national parade in Washington DC where I was able to perform for nearly half a million people with Ben Franklin. Memories are really all that you get to keep, so when it comes to my son, I want to make a ton of them. More importantly, the trick (and I’m not saying I have this completely figured out) is to savor the moments and recognize when you’re in the middle of something you will never want to forget. It is never too late to embrace and capture the moments with your kids that will be important to you for rest of your life. Oh, and make sure you take lots of photos. It never hurts to have those little triggers to remind you of the good times.

Lesson 3: Budget wisely

Keeping an expensive tour bus on the road for several years was not an easy task. In fact, I made some huge financial mistakes early on which created some major challenges for us in keeping the tour alive. Mistakes in booking, not budgeting for unforeseen problems, poor high-risk investments, and not planning well were just some of the issues. I remember one segment of shows in San Francisco where the tour bus transmission blew (at only 11,000 miles). The transmission was just barely 2 or 3 months passed being “under warranty,” which meant that the fix was going to have to come out of my pocket. That incident cost me over $4000 and, in total that year, the tour bus cost over $19,000 in maintenance to keep on the road. Subsequently, kids are obviously an expensive blessing and if you want to keep them happy and healthy, it’s important to start budgeting and saving. I’m already putting together a plan in place, with baby’s momma, to ensure that our baby has health coverage, a college fund, and other “rainy day” savings. I’m working aggressively to pay off a couple debts and hope to have them taken care of completely before the birth. Setting financial goals and putting money away, just in case your kid needs braces or some other unforeseen cost, are a must for any unprepared father who is working on being prepared.

Hopefully these tips can help you to be a rockstar father too.

American singer/songwriter and pianist, Kevin Burdick creates contemporary piano rock ballads that’s both soothing and relaxing.

Currently based in Utah, the singer has 5 releases under his name. Among his albums is this 4-track compilation, In Your Cocoon. It’s a few years old but it’s a great record to have if you want to dip your toes into the artists’ sound.

Sounding a bit of Billy Joel and Elton John, Kevin Burdick is steadily making his name known worldwide. He’s performed in various key cities as well as arena-sized crowds; delighting the audience with his soulful ballads while adding a sweet touch of rock.

Coming from a musical family, it wasn’t long before Kevin wandered around to his instrument of choice; the piano. Although his mom had trouble keeping him motivated, he eventually grew to love the instrument and use it in conjunction with his love for rock.

In Your Cocoon, sees the artist sharing four special songs with his listeners. Opening with the title track, this one’s a quiet cut that combines Burdick’s heartfelt vocals with his expressive piano work. It’s followed by the two minute single, Mercy, which laments a man’s struggle as he overcomes the bottle and asks for a bit of patience.

Meanwhile, She Does Her Crying Alone has a more country vibe. It’s also one of the more melodic tracks that highlights the singer’s beautiful tenor vocals. All Wrapped Up Tight In You, finishes the album in a high note. The soft ballad is short but sweet, teasing the listeners into what the artist is capable of.

Overall, the record is a bit short at less than 15 minutes but it’s enough to warrant a listen. If you enjoy mellow, pop rock then you’d most likely enjoy this compilation. Grab the download. The artist is offering this one absolutely free over at his website.

Apart from this record, you can also check out his other albums like his 2002 debut, Deep Blue America; True Stories and Other Fairy Tales (2005); We Are The Walking Wounded (2008) and his most recent one which was released two years ago in 2010, The Ivory Coast.

Like my sister, for example, who bought my future son a festive Christmas outfit so that this Christmas he will look like a sexy little mini-Santa. She also sent him a “Most Eligible Bachelor” onesie, which makes sense, since he is my son. Another close friend of mine picked up a copy of the book “Tickle Monster” for my baby-on-board, and is planning on buying the accompanying “monster hands” that were made for the book. And yet another close friend recently handed me several new outfits for the stylish little fetus including the cutest little shoes**. It is a huge relief to know that I have so much support out there! A big “Thank You” to all of you!!

On a second note, another ginormous “Thank You” to all of my Facebook Friends who participated in coming up with some new names for the baby boy. Mom is no longer sold on the name ‘Grayson’ which simply means that I do get to have some say in the process, which is really fun. I like the name ‘Miles’ which baby’s momma kind of likes as well (who suggested that again). Most of the other names that were suggested were shot down immediately, but I did appreciate all of the fun ideas.

See the full gallery on Posterous

** The fact that I’m using the words “cutest little shoes” in any sentence is kind embarassing and will require me to do 25 manly push-ups after posting this.

Seven Lesser Known Social Networking Sites (That Could Revolutionize Your Business)

One of the most important parts to being a successful social-networker is staying ahead of the curve with new developments in the industry. Everyone, of course, knows about Facebook and Twitter. You probably are even aware of Pinterest or Instagram now and have found some ways to use those services in your business. Chances are if you were one of the first people who had an account on these sites, you’ve enjoyed a great amount of success on them.

So which seven websites have the potential to be “the Next Big Thing?” Of course, if I knew this information with a 100% certainty, I would invest in them all and be a very rich man. Truthfully, this is an educated guess based on my experience and the fact that I have actually used all of these services on your behalf and have found some very unique business uses for each of them. Here you go:

1) Glancee – What it does: “This network connects you with others who have mutual friends and interests by looking for people nearby and keeping track of all those whom you’ve met, especially those with a lot in common (i.e. golf or knitting). The latest version has functions called Radar, Diary and an easier interface.”

How your business can benefit: It’s fairly easy to find and connect with people in your immediate area who like what you are offering. Say for example that you sell golf equipment, you can see the people around you actually list golf as something they are passionate about.

2) Forecast – What it does: “Share where you’re going and what you’re going to do with this app. Friends can then meet you with the ‘Me Too’ feature and meet you there after. Forget about text messaging or other communications platforms, Forecast will link friends up with just one app. It’s also a form of appointment making if multiple check-ins are lined up.”

How your business can benefit: Forecast enables you to link all of your current clients/customers to you in one easy platform, where your customers can be notified of events and sales and stay connected to you on in and out of the office.

3) Highlight – What it does: “Highlight lets users connect with other Highlight users around them. Other users’ profiles will show up on a Highlight user’s phone, showing their names, photos, mutual friends and other details. Highlight also helps users see what they have in common with others (i.e. golf). So, Highlight doesn’t just show information about friends, it also tells you more about other users who may have something interesting or in common with you.”

How your business can benefit: The power to know which people around you, in your immediate vacinity, are passionate about your product or service is a huge thing. This enables you to network with the power of information at your fingertips and meet new clients not just anywhere, but EVERYWHERE.

4) Localmind - What it does: “Localmind helps users decide where to go and what to do by linking users with ‘experts’ and those who are on-scene. Users can build up an ‘expertise’ in the Localmind community for various locations. Anyone who needs information about that location can then contact the ‘expert’ user for more information. It uses check-in behaviors eg. Foursquare, Facebook, to ascertain whether users are ‘expert’ enough. Users can ask questions of any location in the world, and help fellow users by answering questions about places.”

How your business can benefit: As you make yourself an “Expert” in your field within your geographic area, Localmind users will be routed for you for information on where to go to buy your product, what products or services to use, and (most importantly) who to go to for more information.

5) Banjo - What it does: “What’s unique about Ban.jo is that it uses popular social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Instagram to provide a real time view of what’s happening. It alerts you to people who are nearby, even if they’re not Ban.jo users.”

How your business can benefit: Banjo gives you the power to know where your current and potential customers are, in real-life, by giving you the power to interface with them no matter where you might be. As one of your social networking friends comes into your immediate vicinity, Banjo notices pop up on your phone and tell you who is close to you so that you can move your social networking to “real life.”

6) Sonar – What it does: “Transform online contacts into real-life ones if you use Sonar. It uses publicly available profile information to help a user discover the connections he/she share with people nearby. Ever walk into a room and wonder if you have anything in common with anyone there? Sonar shows you how you are connected to the people around you by analyzing your Foursquare, Facebook, and Twitter networks. Note, that you’ll need a Foursquare account.”

How your business can benefit: How much power would it be to literally walk into a room and be able to spot the three prospective customers in that room because your phone tells you which individuals in that venue like your product? You’d know exactly who to hand out business cards to and why. This is the power of Sonar.

7) Meetup.com – What it does: “A site that helps groups of people with shared interests (i.e. singles, rock-climbers, christians, etc) plan meetings and form offline clubs in local communities around the world.”

How your business can benefit: This service has been around a while longer than the first six I’ve listed, but if you haven’t used it for a boost to your business, you’re probably not alone. For some reason, Meetup.com doesn’t seem to get as much big press as some of the other sites. In my opinion, however, the company is just starting to hit it’s stride and there are plenty of unique groups and other professional groups that would love to have your products or services shared with them. If you were a golf instructor, for example, you may choose to start your own “Better Golf” group in your community OR join existing golf groups and offer to help give a 30 minute tip session at one of their meetings. Regardless, this is great way to expand your business relationships in your immediate geographic area.

Getting more “Klout” for your Business

Professional Golf Instructors spend countless hours refining their tools and applying science to the golf swing of their clients. Today there are a number of tools out there that use scientific principles to increase strength, speed, or consistency. Social media has long since been a labor of trial and error, and don’t get me wrong, there still is a large measure of that, however, now with free services like Klout.com we can start applying scientific principles to our social media in an effort to improve our results.

Applying Science to Social Media. I began my personal journey with social networking nearly 10-years-ago in 2003 when MySpace was launched. It was an amazing new power to be able to share my voice at the click of a button with thousands of people across the world. At that time, there was no real science to it. It was simply like wielding some sort of marketing shotgun: Try to reach as many people as possible and hope that they might like what I was selling. In a short amount of time I had reached 25,000 MySpace friends, a few of whom even bought something from me. Ten years later, and because of tools like Klout.com, we now can put science and statistics behind what we’re doing in order to achieve better results with less effort.

What is Klout.com? Joe Fernandez, the co-founder of Klout.com, had the epiphany for Klout while he was recovering from major jaw surgery in early 2008. Unable to speak, the 30-something entrepreneur used social media as his voice during his recovery. “Twitter was still kind of a joke,” Fernandez said in a recent interview with Fox News. “This was in early 2008, it was before hashtags were even really being used.” We’ve probably all wondered this as we posted tweets into the twitterverse and status updates to the masses: “How much is anyone actually hearing and responding to the information I’m sending out there. Am I wasting my time?” From this question, while laying in a recovery bed in his New York apartment, the idea for Klout.com was born.

Today Klout.com helps over 100 million users to be able to determine if the social media work they are doing is becoming more or less effective. It is a great tool to be able to have in your social media bag to be able to pull out at times to help make decisions on content, campaigns, and focus based on passed results. So how does it work?

How Does Klout.com Work? It’s simple. Go to Klout.com and login using your Twitter or Facebook logins. Secondly follow the steps by connecting the sites you’re using for your social media including Google+, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, and others. The site will do the rest of the work for you. If you are posting content that is being received and acted upon by individuals in your network, your score will increase. As you continue to post content, you can evaluate on a daily basis (if you desire) the type of information you are posting. From Klout.com I have been able to specifically target things that my fan base love and appreciate and, more importantly, have able to give them MORE of it. For example, recently I posted a photo of an ultrasound of my child. My network, which has a large number of female fans, went nuts over it. It got well over 200 comments and likes on Facebook with new people getting involved. Of course, my Klout Score shot up during that day peaking into the high 60′s. I realized through posting different things and monitoring my Klout Score that my fans want “personal” information. Since them, I’ve been able to accommodate and involve them more by providing photos, stories, posts, and questions that involve them on a personal level, all of which have positively impacted my score. Klout.com is a great tool to help any professional determine exactly what their fans want.

Go to Klout.com and start playing with it today.

Did you guys ever make one of those “Dream Sheets?” You know, the list where your write down all of the things that you’ll get when you make the right amount of money: things like a pony, a brick of gold, or a night with Megan Fox? Well, I made one. Mine (oddly, and maybe not surprisingly) had some small things on it, like a new baseball glove and a cruiser bicycle; however, one of larger tickets items on my list was a Grey 2011 Camaro which I’d planned to get this year. I guess I’m a dreamer AND a realist, because my dream sheet was pretty obtainable.

Pertaining to cars, I’m not a greedy person and I definitely don’t fantasize about spending $100,000 on the biggest depreciating asset I’ll have in this life – an automobile. I had been saving for my new Camaro, hoping for it, and using “The Secret” to make this happen with the power of my mind. Of course, with a new baby on the way, the Camaro now has become the worst car possibly ever for me. The back seat has so little room room that it is basically like a small torture-chamber for an infant in a car seat, or at the very least, abuse to your passenger who has to sit with their knees in the dashboard. “The Family Car” a Camaro is not.

The funny thing about dreams is that if you wish them hard enough and if you’re open-minded to them, sometimes they come true in a different way than you expected. Soon after I found out my baby was on the way, I qualified for a dream loan. Super low-rate, flexibly payments, and a simple closing process. The lender handed me a blank check, which I could write at one of hundreds of approved auto dealers. Now I just had to find the right car for the right price at one of them. I could have easily got a Camaro, however, the Camaro was out – so what would my new dream car be?

My current car, a small 2004 Toyota Matrix, was a still reliable ride; however, she had ballooned to 177,000 miles and was a little small for a family. As a bachelor, we’d seen a lot of the country together. I would miss her.

Like a grown-up, I began my auto-buying process by grabbing a Consumer Reports membership and, by using the process of elimination, quickly nailing things down to one of the three cars based on Reliability, Price, and Safety: The Volvo xc60, The Toyota Highlander, and the Nissan Murano.

All vehicles had similar benefits and price, all had a sort of sexy small-SUV kind of look. The numbers were all very similar for these three vehicles, however, I decided that I didn’t love the Murano. The clincher for me was the third row of seats in the Highlander and also the lower repair costs in the Highlander over the Volvo xc60.

So I didn’t get my “dream” grey Camaro, but I did get a 2011 Dark Grey Toyota Highlander, a Consumer Reports “Recommended Buy.” The body is sexy, the car gets massive reliability ratings, and Consumer Reports gave it it’s Seal of Awesomeness (see below – not an actual thing). Not to mention it gets suprisingly great gas mileage for an SUV. So there you have it: My new dream car (which I have just scribbled on a piece of paper entitled, “My New Dream Sheet”) is the Grey 2011 Toyota Highlander with the third row of awesome seats (see below). I love it and it’ll be a great tool for driving my baby wherever he needs to go – reliably and safely!!

Looks like little Kevin’s all growns up.

Having a baby on the way has made me reflect a lot lately on “family values.” The one thing about every church, organization, and political party is that these are something that people can leave or change. A family – someones DNA, their blood – those are things that connect a person for a lifetime and beyond.

I’ve started thinking that it’s important that my family have a set of core values that transcend religion or political affiliation. I think that every family needs a family creed, which for me is just a simple set of accessible, practical values that I can impart to my children. These are things that are not just hung on a wall or cross-stitched on a pillow; these are ideas that will help guide life decisions, and a way of viewing the world that will help my children grow and become successful in their endeavors, while also having the tools to deal with life’s challenges. At the core, these values will define what it means to be a Burdick.

So far, I’ve come up with three P’s that reflect these values, but I have a feeling these will evolve more as I get closer to my baby’s birth (plus, I haven’t run these by baby’s momma yet). I would definitely welcome your feedback, ideas, and experiences as I work to finish defining them.

FAMILY VALUE 1: PEOPLE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THINGS

This is something my father used to always say to us growing up. It is a good way of putting things in proper perspective, especially when your child puts a syrup-covered Eggo Waffle in your DVD Player. You can always replace a DVD player, but your child is irreplaceable. As children get older and a friend loses their toy or someone dents their car, it is always an important value to help remind them that things are replaceable; relationships are not.

FAMILY VALUE 2: POSITIVITY IS A CHOICE

People have the power to choose their view of life. We all have negativity thrown at us, terrible tragedies which we have to overcome, and huge frustrations that we will undoubtedly encounter. But we can always choose to be grateful for the things we do have and focus our minds towards making something positive out of our trials, learning important lessons, and using our experiences to help and inspire others. Positivity & optimism starts with gratitude for the good in life and moves out from there.

FAMILY VALUE 3: LIVE LIFE WITH PASSION

Life can and should be fun. Laugh. Find things that you love to do and do them with passion. Fundamentally, I want my home to be a fun place where we are just as passionate about each other as we are about our own goals, dreams, and hobbies. At the very heart: Life is good!

So there you have it: My Burdick Family Values, draft one. Now, I just need to learn how to cross-stitch so that I can put my 3 P’s on pillows for my children to sleep on. Anyone giving lessons?

_________________________________

On another note, I stumbled onto this fun YouTube Channel this week for parents. Enjoy the laughs:

The ultrasound this morning produced enough sure evidence that I can say with nearly 100% confidence that we are having a baby boy. In fact, this baby boy was so well-endowed that I can say without even needing to go on the Maury Povich show that it is definitely mine. “Kevin, you are the father!” My great viking heritage still hangs strong! Thank you Odin!

So what does this mean? It means that the Burdick family name will continue for at least one more generation. I am the last in my direct line and only one of a couple male Burdick cousin’s left in my family tree of child-making age (though I guess anything is possible).

It also means that “Greyson Russell Burdick” will be the oldest son, of an oldest son, of an oldest son, of an oldest son. He inherits a proud legacy, and a unique name that he can wear as a badge of honor. Not only the Burdick name, but the name of his grandfather and of his great-grandfather, “Russell.”

To Greyson: When that first kid on the playground makes fun of your name by pronouncing it “Burds-Dick” and think he’s being clever (even though that’s old, played-out and not in the least bit creative*), simply look him in the eye and say, “You know it! It’s an ostrich!” Embrace your name. Own it. Run with it. Your legacy is deep and wonderful and your family is steeped in love and tradition. You will be smart, funny, creative, musical, and fearless. You will also have an upper-back the size of a washing machine and a head that is hard to find hats for. Don’t worry about it – it’s just part of your sexy Burdick charm. Welcome to the family!
