We had our first ultrasound last Thursday, which made all of this a little more real.  I didn’t know if I’d get more nervous or excited, but it was truly incredible to hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time…  And baby is big!  They guesstimate is that the date of conception was around 12 weeks ago, which pretty much works with the expected timeline of me being the father… Not that I had any doubts in her story that I was the only possible candidate.  It should be noted that Baby’s Mamma took some antibiotic back then for an upper-respiratory infection which may have somehow weakened the affects of her birth control.  But who knows.  Personally, I’m just trying to have the mindset that this is all meant to be.

I did get a little panicked when, for a few minutes, the ultrasound technician suspected we may have a second baby in there.  Clearly there was a second heartbeat that was moving at a faster rate; However, after rechecking, she left us moderately certain that there was only one baby camped out in the “Magic Uterus of Gondor” (not a medical term) and that the second heartbeat was just an echo off of the placenta.  She did set us up for another ultrasound appointment in two weeks where we will likely find out if we’re having a boy or a girl and if the placental echo theory was 100% accurate.

I was thrilled and grateful that momma let me come into the ultrasound room.  She didn’t even throw me out when they had to do a pelvic ultrasound which involved her putting on a hospital gown and having a mini-submarine placed in her lady parts.  Maybe I will get to be there for the birth after all.
